STEPHANIE'S BOOK COVER SPOTLIGHTS:

Welcome! When Julie asked me to talk about book covers and pick some each week I liked to spotlight I was unsure how I’d do it. Where do you start? I’m not a trained illustrator. I only know what captures my attention when browsing the bookstore or online sight. I’ll explain what made me pick up each book and look at the back cover blurb. Sometimes I buy them, sometimes I don’t but everyone of them attracted my attention in a sea of books.
Let’s get started.

Gone With the Witch book by Annette Blair, Cover byArn0

In a bookstore filled with photographic covers, this one is an old fashioned illustration. While the cover girl is dressed very goth, there is a sweetness to her face that draws the reader in. The pose is provocative but not overly so, and the black cat at her feet clues you into the fact that this story has magic, even without reading the title I can guess she is a witch.

Halfway to the Grave book by Jeaniene Frost, cover by Unknown

Another cover that breaks the mold. The foggy cemetery background and the lighting have an undead feel, which immediately draws the eye of readers that enjoy vampire stories. The heroine on the cover, similar to the heroine on Gone With The Witch cover in a provocative pose, but this heroine is dangerous – the dagger in her hand shows me that. It also shows me that this is a heroine that doesn’t need her hero to rescue her, but likes to have him along for backup.

Into Thin Air book by Cindy Miles, Cover by Unknown

It’s really a very plain cover, no faces and for a change the hero of the book has a shirt on, Just a hint of his chest is visible. The fade out of his feet makes you think he might be a ghost and the smile you see on the heroine’s face is happy. The faded castle in the background is a wonderful touch and lets you know that this will be set in England or Europe without beating you over the head. While the cover has a lot of white space, it is done in such a way that it is appealing and has an innocence about it.

Soul of a Highlander book by Melissa Mayhue, Cover by Jamie DeJesus

This cover doesn’t rely on any of the traditional focal points of a romance cover, which makes it leap off the shelf. There’s no half dressed hero or heroine smirking at the reader. It does have a whimsical cover that draws the shopper’s eye from the tiny waterfall up the craggy rocks to the castle. It makes the reader pause for that .5 second that may have their hand reaching for the book to see what’s going on inside.

These are just my opinions on the covers, information on who designed the covers was found on the copyright page. I can only assume that the cover artists for Into Thin Air and Halfway to the Grave are staff illustrators for the respective publishing houses. If you see a great cover, send me the link – I may agree with you and post my thoughts.
