Touch of Texas
is Tracy Garrett’s debut novel. And boy does she get with you the
first line “Whoever said hell was hot had lied.”
Jake McCain is the
epitome of a Texas Ranger. He’s rough, tough, and a loner. Jake
believes that good will overcome evil. But the band of murders and
thieves he has been tracking has gotten the best of Jake. Beaten and
left to die in a freezing blizzard, Jake wonders if he will ever see the
sun again.
Rachel Hudson is
raising her eight-year old brother Nathan and teaching children in the
small community of Lucinda, Texas. She is a good woman trying to make
a good life for her brother and herself. So when she hears a thump on
the front porch during a blizzard and discovers a frozen man, she does
what any good woman would do . . . she has the man’s horse drag him into
her small cabin and tend to his wounds. But this stranger awakens
feelings in Rachel that she does not want to have. She does not want
to turn into her mother, a woman of the night.
The relationship
between Rachel and Jake evolves into a beautiful relationship. Jake is
concerned about his lineage (being half Apache Indian and half English)
will affect Rachel and her brother Nathan in a negative way. He saw
firsthand the suffering it caused his parents, and he does not want
Rachel and Nathan to go through that. But Rachel can’t help but love
this man who wants to protect her and her brother.
Jake and Nathan
immediately form a bond. It was great to see not only the relationship
between Jake and Rachel bloom, but also that of Jake and Nathan. This
added another dimension to the story
Through the course of
the story, Jake discovers that the leader of the band of men he has been
tracking not only killed his mother, but also murder Rachel’s mother.
And Harrison, the leader, has discovered Rachel is still alive and he is
going to find her. Jake swears on his life that he will keep Rachel
and Nathan safe, but can he do it?
Tracy Garrett has a
great future in western historical. This is a sweet love story with a
side of suspense and a twist at the end. And yes, Jake did get to see
the sun again. In fact, he gave it to Rachel. Here’s a line from one
of their love scenes, “Hold on, darlin’, and let me give you the sun.”
