Synopsis:

In the 1870s Brandon Wade is driving a herd of longhorns over the Chisholm Trail when a youth appears out of nowhere riding a magnificent black stallion and packing a deadly looking six-gun. In need of trail hands, Brandon hires the young man. Not until weeks later, during the middle of a terrible stampede, does Brandon learn that his young sharpshooter is a beautiful woman. A woman full of fire and passion whom he burns to possess. A woman steeped in mystery who refuses to disclose her past.

Alexandria O'Malley is on the run and must be able to disappear at a moment's notice. When she hires on to the cattle drive, she doesn't expect the powerful attraction between herself and her trail boss or the response of her treacherous body.

SRR GRADE: A+

Silverhills takes you back to the era of the old western with the traditional hero and heroine, the faithful stallion and requisite canine companion. The story begins with a hidden identity, and the comedic situations surrounding a fairly innocent young woman hiding on a cattle drive with a group of ranch hands. Alexandria O'Malley, on the run from a villain, hides on the trail with trail boss Brandon Wade, his cantankerous cook aptly named Cookie and an odd assortment of characters that grow on you as the book progresses. Alex, masquerading as a youth, is extremely engaging, charming the hands, Cookie, Bran and most especially the reader as she embroils herself in one scrape after another. Ultimately, Alexandria is kidnapped by Brandon's worst enemy, which evokes a daring rescue and ends up with Alex being injured. Naturally, the injury causes Bran to realize Alex is really Alexandria, and for them to ultimately act on their feelings for each other. Unfortunately, this does not mean they are wise enough to admit these feelings to each other anytime soon.

While somewhat reminiscent of Ginny and Steve in Sweet Savage Love, I really enjoyed Silverhills because it lacked that story's sometimes brutal intensity. Bran and Alex moved at their own pace, but it was a pace the reader could enjoy with them, laughing at their mishaps, sighing at their tender moments and feeling with some anxiety that just maybe this time Brandon would not reach Alex in time to save her. I really enjoyed this story. Several of the secondary characters were engaging enough to merit their own story, and they added just the right amount of additional excitement to the story without taking the focus away from Alex and Bran. Although I would have loved another book (!) the Epilogue was a nice touch, an unusually lengthy recap to bring closure to all the characters that I fell in love with in the preceding hours – Outstanding!
