Synopsis:

How many times will an orphan be cast aside before someone offers love?

Shauna Joyce has three weeks to find a husband or face watching a special little girl fall into the hands of loveless parents. An orphan herself, she knows the heartache of growing up without love. Armed with a need greater than her own, she finds a likely candidate in bridge-builder, Kane McKenna.

Kane McKenna has one goal; to finish the bridge he’s erecting so he can earn the capital needed to start a business of his own. A wife and child would drain his finances, so when Shauna Joyce proposes marriage, he balks at the idea. Will her determination be enough to build the bridge of trust needed to make him trade one dream for another?

Ciara Gold’s Once Jilted is one of those stories that will make you feel warm inside. The characters are very well developed and I found myself tearing up a time or two in empathy for all that Shauna had been through and was still in the midst of. The setting of early 19th century Indiana was well developed and you could easily immerse yourself in the town’s dusty roads.

Six years ago Shauna had taken the Orphan train west to find a new family. She had all the hopes and dreams of any 14 year old; unfortunately the reality wasn’t as pretty. Shauna found herself basically an indentured servant until she was 18. Jilted at the alter Shauna felt lost and didn’t want to stay with her foster family but didn’t know where to go. That is until a new orphan train came to town, bearing on it a little girl named Sarabeth, who stole Shauna’s heart. Now Shauna had a purpose – to adopt Sarabeth and give her the family she herself had wanted. Unfortunately this is a small problem, in order to do so Shauna has to get married and has only two weeks do it.

She hatches a plan to get a member of the construction crew working on the new bridge to marry her. Of course that is going to take a bit of convincing, especially when she finds herself falling for the surly foreman, Kane, who wants nothing to do with marriage.

Ms. Gold based Once Jilted on real events and I know without a doubt that person behind this story would be thrilled. Heartwarming, funny and even a little suspenseful this is a great read. The romance is sweet, our heroine strong willed and very feisty and the hero is well…definitely a hunk. Take home Once Jilted today, I don’t think you’ll be sorry you did.
