Synopsis:

Eleanor, a hybrid elf, wishes she didn't want Erick. If only he didn't feel so good. But he's broken and can't see her as his fated one. She knows he'll hurt her and she hates him for it. She'd escape to Gildon if she had the spells to survive the bitter cold mountain pass.

King Frederick (Erick) of Biston can see only what he lost in the war, not what's left. But when Eleanor Borona sways her hips back into his life, all grown up and emitting her come-kiss-me perfume, everything really goes to hell. Erick can't stop himself from touching her electrifying body. He shouldn't feel this way. She shouldn't be the one who can lift his curse. If the seemingly fickle hybrid doesn't end him with her magic, her father, Henry, will run him through — or worse, abandon him. Henry had won Erick the throne and keeps the cursed crown on his head.

And then a night at the masquerade threatens to turn their whole world upside down.

Vanessa N. Gilfoy is a very gifted writer, and while Masquerade of the Cursed King is a good book, it is not one of her best. The story centers on King Erick and the half-Elvin hybrid Princess Eleanor.  The premise of the story is sound and initially seems like it should be entertaining: the prince is not able to have a relationship with a "human," only a hybrid can arouse him. Unfortunately, rather than being destined for each other, Erick and Eleanor seem to spend the entire book fighting, ignoring or having anonymous sex with each other. Luckless individuals that we are, the readers are forced to struggle along with Erick and Eleanor to the end, which is quite bitter at times, hoping they find a happy resolution.

The character development is not as strong as I would have liked: Prince Erick lacks motivation, and the secondary characters are almost one dimensional, more useful as page fillers than individuals necessary to advance the story. There are several chapters that kept me entertained and amused however, there are an equal number that had me questioning their inclusion in the story. Because I like this author so much, I will recommend that anyone interested in fantasy try the story for themselves to see if they disagree with my review.
