Synopsis:

She's an American heiress nobody wants; he's a Duke every woman is after. When Nathaniel, Duke of Peckham, meets Charlotte, he's suspicious of her indifference. Too many women have sought—and failed—to catch him. However, Charlotte is more interested in dead pharaohs than English dukes. Her pretended immunity vanishes, however, when a debutante seeking to entrap Nathaniel gets murdered. All too soon, his reputation as a misogynist makes him a suspect, and Charlotte impulsively comes to his aide. Unfortunately, both are unaware that a highwayman interested in rich heiresses is following Charlotte. And that another debutante lies dead in Nathaniel's carriage. Some nights just don't go as planned.

Nathanial Archer, Duke of Peckham was overrun with women dying to be his wife. He had to have his bedchamber checked every evening by the staff to flush out the women trying to put him in a compromising position. He was more than surprised when his uncle cheated in a card game and won an American heiress.

Charlotte Haywood had no intentions of getting married. Too tall, and redheaded to boot, men just didn’t want her. Orphaned, she was sent to live with family in London, until she reached her majority. But she is always fostered off to another relative and then another until she reaches the Archer household. Mr. John Archer and his wife Lady Victoria couldn’t be better hosts, but she knew that when she showed her natural self, they’d be ready to pack her off as well. It was really a shame that she couldn’t filter what she said before she said it. Apparently the people in London were very thin skinned and she was always insulting someone. Such as the night of a ball at an old schoolmates home. She had unbeknown insulted a duke. More than once. Sad part was, she didn’t care. Until she learned the next morning that the duke in question was Mr. Archer’s nephew.

In a plan that sound too farfetched to work the duke wants her to pretend to be is fiancée in order for him to have some peace. After all, in three years, when she reaches her majority, she’s going to Egypt to go on a dig. The plan could work for up to three years.

Then two women come up dead, and the fingers are pointing to Nathanial, especially since the last one was found in his carriage. They work together to find out who’s killing the women and trying to place the blame on him.

Then Nathanial realizes that he wants to marry Charlotte. But she still has her mind set that she’s leaving as soon as possible. Only when she’s kidnapped for ransom does he realize that he loves her. Then Charlotte is attacked not once, but twice in one night. It’s going to take some serious maneuvering on Nathanial’s part to get Charlotte to agree to marry him—this time for real. And he refuses to take no for an answer.

Just when you think you’ve got the villain picked out, unless you’ve cheat and peek, you may or may not get it. I was surprised by one of them anyway. Sweetly romantic, the intrigue alone is worth reading the book. The romance is soft and it’s a book anyone could enjoy.
