Synopsis:
Lizeria flees her mother's crumbling empire. As she stumbles through the
nearly demolished Kingdom of Vinn, the mouthwatering Alexander Rey tempts
her with other plans. If she'll be his and his alone, he'll train her to
raise the Onyx Empire from its ashes and defeat the wizards.
Though he claims to be human, he moves like an elf. He seduces her and says
he's her fated, but he can't be. Electric sparks don't pass from his skin
and mind shields prevent her from reading the truth. She'll have to grow
stronger to break him, but that means learning elven king's magic from
Alexander's cursed blackstones. |

Who is the true Guardian
of the Onyx Empire and how does the reader decide who is friend and who
is foe? Those are the difficult questions that Lizeria must also answer as
she makes her way to safety when we first encounter her in Vanessa N.
Gilfoy's new book. This story has a myriad of twists and turns to keep the
reader interested, with a surprise added every now and then to confuse and
enthuse us. The action scenes are very exciting, and do a great deal to
advance the story to the next level. When describing her characters or
situations, Ms. Gilfoy is very meticulous in plotting each detail to set the
stage for that specific scene. Her writing style has an "Alice in
Wonderland" meets Dr. Seuss feel: trees are not real trees, people are not
as they seem, small rats become giant rats etc. – great fun!
Added to the sense of
fantasy are three one of a kind main characters. On the surface Lizeria,
Alexander and Gray are an Elvin hybrid Princess, a human and a dwarf -
certainly interesting characters, but nothing too unusual. Delve a little
deeper and Ms. Gilfoy paints some of these characters with a sinister brush,
making the reader question their actions, their motivations and their
reasons for being together. This doubt makes for a great story, one that
keeps the reader enthralled till the very end, and anticipating more once
the story is done.
