Disoriented Dress by
Liam Stalls is a very unusual book comprised of multiple layers with several
messages to relate. While it is a romance, and an erotic romance at that, it
is also a commentary on the evils of various types of physical and mental
abuse, and how they can affect a relationship. The serious issues in this
book, particularly the domestic abuse, make it somewhat difficult to read at
times; this is not always a light happy romance novel. It is however a
deeply emotional and heart wrenching read, evoking intense empathy for its
heroine, Janet, and great antipathy for her boyfriend, John. Mr. Stalls
handles the subject matter with a delicate touch, never becoming so
descriptive or graphic that the reader is turned away from the story itself,
just the characters' behaviors.
What redeems Disoriented
Dress, and in the end saves Janet is her ability to trust herself and
her own judgment by turning to Cliff. She has made such poor choices
throughout the book; we wonder will we see her make the right one? There are
a few surprises with the secondary characters, and Mr. Stall does an
interesting job of making Janet's surroundings secondary character's as
well: the shop, the bedroom, the house each one has a dark almost sinister
presence in her life, a dark void waiting to suck her in if she'll let it.
While not the most comfortable book I have ever read, Disoriented Dress
is certainly one of the most well-written; therefore I definitely recommend
this book.
