Carnal is the third book in
Nathalie Gray’s Lycan Warriors series. Perhaps if I had read the
previous two I would have enjoyed Carnal more. However, what I found
was a good science fiction story that had no great romance, and stock
werewolf concepts.
Of the main characters, Cristoval
Vonatos and Dragana, only Cristoval kept me reading, his never say die
attitude in the face of torture was very much the alpha hero that we all
love so much. Dragana in contrast is too hard for a heroine, which I could
accept in the beginning if there had been some growth throughout the book
into a woman. While I have nothing against a strong heroine, she should
demonstrate some feminine softness, which I found lacking in the character.
Shifter/werewolf content is
something I look for and read extensively when not reviewing, however Ms.
Gray’s choice to have her genetically created Lycans mirror werewolves from
horror movies of the 50’s did not sit well with me. Too many battles in this
short book were neglected by having the character shift, these battles could
have increased the tension, suspense and character development of the book.
However, we are treated to multiple instances of the shift taking over the
character then a time jump where the character is wondering what happened.
Despite my, admittedly, strong
criticisms of Carnal at its core is a good Sci-fi story that will
satisfy readers who enjoy them. The descriptions are well done and what we
are shown is a complex world in the midst of a rebellion. Ms. Gray’s world
building skills are excellent.
