There aren’t many writers that have the ability to make me lose sleep by
staying up all night to finish a book. Carol McPhee’s A Spirited Liaison
did just that. By the title and blurb I expected a ghost story as the main
plot of the book, but that wasn’t what she delivered. Instead she delivered
a wonderful romance of a hard-nosed business man and an eccentric Romance
Novelist, who happened to have a little help from a ghost.
Through most of the book the Crimson Devil, Captain Ben Murphy, Erin
O’Malley’s many times great-grandfather is merely a presence nudging the
Erin and Lance towards each other. Lance Dalton’s single-minded desire to
have Erin indebted to him could cost him the girl. Erin who would almost
seem to be the pawn between the Ben and Lance, is the most surprising of the
lot; intelligent, witty, and though eccentric completely grounded having
left behind the corporate world of her father and Lance to find herself. Add
in an overprotective Doberman named Max, and you’ve got a story that will
keep you glued to your seat waiting for the next revelation.
