SRR: Hello Cynthia. Thank you so much for letting me
interview you for Simply Romance Reviews. Please tell us a little bit
about yourself. |
Cynthia
Eden: Thank you for the welcome! Hmmm…a bit about myself,
huh? Well, I’m a southern girl, married to a Greek guy, and I have a son
named after a pirate. I love horror movies, romance novels, and happy
endings.

|
SRR: Have you always wanted to be a writer? Is there any
particular thing that influenced/influences you? |
|
Cynthia Eden:
Oh, yes, I’ve always wanted to write—for as long as I could
remember, anyway. In school, I particularly enjoyed reading tales from
Edgar Allan Poe. I’ve had a fascination with the paranormal for years, and
getting to write paranormal stories now—it’s a real dream come true for me.
|
|
SRR: Tell us a little about your new
title Hotter after Midnight? |
Cynthia Eden: Certainly!
Hotter After Midnight is a paranormal romance, scheduled to be released by
Kensington Brava in May of 2008. The heroine, Dr. Emily Drake, is a
psychologist who only treats paranormal patients. She finds herself drawn
into a murder investigation, acting as a profiler. She is teamed up with
Detective Colin Gyth, a man with many secrets (including the fact that he is
a wolf shifter). The longer the two work together, the hotter the desire
burns between them. But, there is a killer stalking the streets of Atlanta,
and they have to stop him—no matter what the cost may be.
|
|
SRR: How did you develop your plots and characters?
Do you outline? |
Cynthia Eden:
For this Hotter After Midnight, I just started writing. I had an idea for
my main character—I knew that I wanted Emily to be a psychologist—and a
psychic. I decided that she would be empathic, but that her empathic powers
would only work with the Other. From the heroine’s character, I was able to
create a hero that I thought would challenge her…and all of the other
characters appeared as I wrote.
I don’t generally outline in advance, so I let the beginning of this book
unravel, then, when I was about 100 pages into the tale, I stopped to plot
the rest of the story.
Honestly, though, this process changes for each book that I write.

SRR: A famous writer once said
that writing is hard
work, and that you have to give up a great deal of your personal life to be
a writer. Do you believe in that
statement? And how do you go about fitting in time to write? |
Cynthia Eden:
Writing is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. After I’ve been
pounding out pages, I feel mentally beat. As for my personal life, I have
to set aside specific hours to write. So, yes, sometimes, I have to limit my
personal life to an extent, but I think I do manage to balance things pretty
well. Actually, by “balance” I mean that I generally stay up until midnight
or one a.m. writing so that I can have my personal time and get my writing
goals met, too.

|
SRR: Can you share a little of your current work with us?
|
|
Cynthia Eden:
I’m working on two stories right now—one is a full-length novel
and the other is a novella. In the novel, I’m writing about a demon with a
very dark side and the woman who storms into his life. And in the novella,
I’ve got a vampire hero who is coming face-to-face with a lover who thought
he was long dead (which the vampire is, of course—well, sort of, anyway!). |
|
SRR: What advice would you give to writers just starting out? |
|
Cynthia Eden:
Write what you love. Don’t try to fit a trend. Write the story
that whispers to you at odd moments of the day. Listen to the whispers and
don’t give in to any doubts.
|
|
SRR: Are there any upcoming events you’d like to tell us about? |
|
Cynthia Eden:
I will be attending the Silken Sands Writing Conference in
Pensacola, Florida from April 11-13th. At the conference, I’ll
present a workshop: “Keeping the Normal in Your Paranormal Story.”
|
